West Lyon pounds Emmetsburg, boots Western Christian

The win over Emmetsburg was alot of fun. The score was only 7-0 at half, but in the second half you could really see Big Blue coming together. They were flying to the ball on defense and on offense they were really getting physical. Dylan Huyser was just awesome. He made some runs over people that were impressive. Jaeden Snyder seems to be getting better and better. He threw the ball alot and made most of them. The Homecoming win over Western was a nail biter. They have some guys that are fast and that QB is tough. Defensively though they continue to have no answer for Big Blue coming right at them. This year's line seems to be really coming together. It was a physical game that we won up front. I have an article about the game for you to read. Hinton is next. All I keep hearing about is how good they are this year. The game is there and I am sure they will be ready for us. After what has happened the last couple weeks, maybe our very young team is ready for them.

E-Hawks Struggle In District Loss To West Lyon

Emmetsburg's E-Hawks gave a good effort but struggled in a 34-7 loss to defending state champions West Lyon in Class 1A District play Friday night. The setback gives the E-Hawks a 1-1 mark in district play and 2-2 overall on the season.
Emmetsburg opened the game with the ball but would have to punt right away. However, West Lyon would suffer a similar fate and punted back to the E-Hawks as the two teams settled in for what appeared to be a ground battle.
With 8:28 to go in the opening quarter, the E-Hawks took over after the punt and would drive down to the West Lyon 20 yard line, but a fumble with 1:50 to go in the quarter killed the drive to give the Wildcats the ball, which the moved to midfield when the quarter ended.
The E-Hawk defense would stiffen to start the second quarter and forced a punt, but the offense would be stalled by the Wildcat defense to force a punt.
West Lyon took over after the E-Hawk punt at their 24 yard line, but with 7:19 to play in the half, a fumble was recovered by the E-Hawks' Carson Clark at the Wildcat's 16-yard line, giving the E-Hawks a golden opportunity.
Emmetsburg would grind down to the four yard line, but a false start penalty would back the E-Hawks up to the nine-yard line on third and goal. A run by Thomas Schultes would gain two yards, forcing the E-Hawks to set up for a 22-yard field goal attempt by Thomas Schultes, but the kick faded wide left with 4:07 to go in the half.
West Lyon would get the ball at their 20 and would quickly drive 80 yards for a five yard touchdown with 1:33 to go in the half. The kick would give the Wildcats a 7-0 lead at the intermission.
Emmetsburg would kick off to start the second half, and the Wildcats engineered a 74-yard drive off several passes to cap the possession off with an 11 yard reception for a score. The kick failed, making the score 13-0 with 9:04 to go in the third quarter.
Emmetsburg would go four and out on their resulting possession, but the punt was blocked. Punter Wes Schultes picked the ball up and returned it to the 42 yard line, but a holding penalty backed the E-Hawks up for another try.
On the second try, a motion penalty forced the E-Hawks back five more yards before Schultes' punt put the Wildcats at their own 29 yard line.
West Lyon took over and engineered a clock-eating drive of 71 yards that was capped off with a nine yard scoring run with 2:38 to go in the quarter. The two-point conversion made the score 21-0 as the E-Hawks struggled to mount an offensive attack.
Another punt would ensue for Emmetsburg before the end of the quarter, which saw West Lyon reach midfield with the 21-0 lead to start the final quarter.
The Wildcats would waste little time in the final frame as they got a 33 yard touchdown run and conversion kick to take a 28-0 lead with 11:26 to go in the contest.
Emmetsburg would go three and out on their next possession and West Lyon would start at midfield once again. A combination of passes and runs would result in a six-yard touchdown with 6:46 to play, but the kick failed for a 34-0 score.
Emmetsburg would be able to field the resulting kickoff, the first of the night, and Tanner Lundgren returned it to the 17 yard line, where quarterback Clayton Freeman began driving the E-Hawks downfield. With the clock winding down, the E-Hawks would finally find the end zone when Thomas Schultes dived into the end zone from a yard out with 1:07 to play. Schultes added the conversion kick for the 34-7 final tally.
The E-Hawks managed 189 rushing yards off 48 attempts and 22 passing yards in the setback. Thomas Schultes carried 19 times for 96 yards, while Grant Deitering added 20 carries for 69 yards. Clayton Freeman ran the ball six times for 11 yards and Wes Schultes ran three times for 13 yards.
Clayton Freeman would compete three of nine passes for 22 yards, with Will Schany making one catch for 12 yards and Wes Schultes catching two passes for 10 yards.
Defensively, the E-Hawks got a fumble recovery from Carson Clark along with seven tackles, while Wes Schultes had 11 tackles and Grant Deitering added 10 stops. Will Schany had six tackles and Brent Wesley added five stops to the effort for the E-Hawks.
West Lyon would gain 217 rushing yards off 34 attempts and had 143 yards passing off 11 of 15 passing for 360 total offensive yards on the night.

Long field goal gives West Lyon 29-27 victory

INWOOD, Iowa | Jaden Snyder will certainly have plenty more memorable moments on the football field, but it will be hard to top what happened here Friday night.
Snyder, a sophomore, kicked a 41-yard field goal with 36.3 seconds left, lifting No. 8 West Lyon to a dramatic 29-27 victory over 10th-ranked Hull Western Christian in a matchup of ranked Class 1A squads at the Jay Rozeboom Complex.
Although Snyder's kick provided the game-winning points, the triumph wasn't sealed until defensive lineman Cole Joachim intercepted a tipped pass in the closing seconds.
With the victory, West Lyon moved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in Class 1A District 2 heading into a battle at third-ranked and unbeaten Hinton next week.
Sticking to his normal game plan, which is pound the ball on the ground and keep the clock moving, West Lyon Coach Jay Rozeboom had all the confidence in the world in his young kicker, even though he missed a point-after kick earlier in the game.
“We pounded the ball like we had been doing all night to keep their offense off the field and kind of scratched where it itches,” Rozeboom said of the game-winning drive, which began at the Wildcat 35 and stalled at the Western Christian 24. “We've made those kicks in practice so we felt if we could get it in the middle of the field we would be OK.”
Western (3-2, 2-1) decided not to “ice” Snyder by calling time out and the younger brother of former West Lyon all-stater Brandon Snyder, now with the Iowa Hawkeyes, split the uprights with a few yards to spare.
“I had trouble the last couple games kicking PATs, but I knew in my mind I had the ability to do it,” Snyder said. “We've been doing it in practice and practice makes perfect.”
It was the second dramatic win in the last three weeks for West Lyon, which scored on a late drive to beat Sibley-Ocheyedan 17-13 a couple of weeks ago.
“We've played a lot of close games this year,” Rozeboom said. “Our kids are resilient and they held together. They care for one another, keep working hard and try to get better every play.”
Western Christian took a 27-26 lead when Drake Granstra's 1-yard run capped an 11-play, 67 yard drive and Riley Van't Hul kicked the extra point with 7:54 remaining in the game.
But that, of course, was plenty of time for West Lyon to regroup and the Wildcats ran 14 plays – all on the ground – before Snyder's field goal.
Dylan Huyser, a 195-pound junior, was the workhorse, toting the pigskin 29 times for 118 yards. Noah Van't Hof, another talented sophomore, gained 116 yards on 17 carries.
For the record, there are no seniors in the West Lyon backfield.
Western Christian's Tyson Kooima passed for 188 yards and a touchdown and also ran for an 11-yard touchdown. Kooima completed 11 of 23, including a 37-yard scoring strike to Joey Horstman.
Huyser's 3-yard plunge with 2.8 seconds left in the third quarter tied the game at 20-20, but Western Christian answered with its go-ahead scoring drive.
“It was two teams that fought back and forth for four quarters,” Western Christian Coach Travis Kooima said. “Like I just told these guys, wins and losses are a dime a dozen, but they're going to remember this game because it was just a fun, fun Friday night atmosphere for a high school football game.
“Both teams made big plays when they needed to. Hats off to them, they made the kick when they needed to and made the plays when they needed to. They kind of imposed their will on us in between the second and third quarters up front.
“But in the fourth quarter, to come up with that stand and make them have to make a 41-yarder. We had to play it safe because you never know, coaches have funky plays up their sleeves on 41-yard field goals. Our guys are pretty resilient, we'll watch the tape, learn and get better.”
The teams traded touchdowns in both the first and second quarters, each missing a point-after kick. Van't Hof's 6-yard run with 21 seconds left in the half put the Wildcats in front, 20-13.
