Top-ranked West Lyon overwhelms Akron-Westfield
By Douglas Clark
AKRON -- In hosting the state's top Class A football team Friday night,
Akron-Westfield coach Erik Walkingstick knew his squad would be facing a
tall order versus West Lyon.
The Wildcats carried a 42-0 advantage into the lockerroom at the half.
That proved to be the case as
the Wildcats jumped out to an early 21-0 first quarter lead en route to
a 42-6 win over the Westerners.
"We knew going in where we
stood," Walkingstick said. "We did some things pretty good, but fell
short. We knew we had to play mistake-free football and the kids gave us
a good week of practice, but it didn't go our
way. We tip our hat to West Lyon. They are a really good football team."

Sam Mace scrambles in the backfield during the Westerners' loss to West
Lyon at home Friday night.
The Westerners got on the scoreboard with 4:13 left in the game, courtesy of a Devon Myers 8-yard touchdown run.
A-W's Sam Mace was 7-15 passing for 15 yards while Nathan Sanchez was 1-1 for nine yards.
Cody Bosse led the Westerners in rushing with 28 yards on nine carries while Chance Hoffman had 20 yards on three carries.
Sanchez caught three passes for 34 yards and Hoffman hauled in four receptions for 16 yards.
Defensively, Bosse paced A-W
with nine total tackles, including one tackle for loss while Kevin
Carlson had seven stops. Devon Myers and Jacob Bergman recorded four
tackles each while Arron Green had three stops.
With A-W's season now in the
books, Walkingstick commended his players for their hard work and
dedication, particularly those who have worn the Westerners jersey for
the final time.
The A-W seniors are Nathan
Sanchez, Sam Mace, Taylor Anderson, Garrett Finzen, Jacob Bergman, Cody
Bosse, Chance Hoffman, Jay Schoen, Scott Garrett, Alex Foley, Arron
Green, John Wolthuizen and Kurtis Hoffman.
"Our seniors were a class act
on and off the field," he said. "They worked hard all summer in
preparation for the season and demonstrated leadership throughout. They
really represented the Akron-Westfield community
well. This was not the season they intended it to be, but it served as a
life lesson and they will be better people. They were not ready for the
season to come to an end, but that is to be expected from a group that
prides itself on being competitive."
Walkingstick said the Westerners would use the 2013 season as a building block for 2014.
"We will lose a lot of good
physical linemen," he said. "So we will be spending a lot of time in the
weight room. We will have some young pieces next year, but they will be
talented pieces. We will soon begin the process
of building highlight tapes to aid our players in recruitment, as well
as developing depth charts and mapping out the path to the next season.
It's an on-going process filled with anticipation and promise."
Now all this being said, Akron did not put up much of a fight. Kind of surprising and disappointing. They are not very good. Oh well, on we got to the next team. Mason City Newman Catholic. I know the have a stud running back, but are 4-5. Just do it Big Blue. Keep it going. GO BIG BLUE!!
