Scrimmage Tonight, Televised game next Thursday!
I have heard things are going fine at practice so far. I wonder how the scrimmage will go? More importantly the Beef Bowl will be televised. I have heard different stories but here is the Sioux City Journal article explaining it all.
ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa | The Beef Bowl is getting an extra name and some extra exposure for one of the best rivalry football games in western Iowa.
When Central Lyon/George-Little Rock hosts West Lyon on Thursday, Aug. 29 to open their 2013 season, there will be more than just fans in the stands watching. The Iowa High School Sports Network will provide coverage online, on the radio and on television of the 7 p.m. game.
The game will be televised locally as well as regionally in six states. See breakout for viewing information.
This is the first time the IHSSN is doing live coverage of any Iowa regular season football game and has named it the Agriculture Bowl.
"We tried to do it a few years ago and we thought we had it and we ran into a problem so they were kind of let down," IHSSN president Ken Krogman said. "I went to the Iowa High School Athletic Association and asked them if they could pick one of the best rivalries who would they pick. Right away they brought up this game."
Both schools and their football coaches were behind the idea even if they do have to open up the season a night earlier.
“It is good exposure for our school, our kids and our fans,” Central Lyon/GLR Coach Toby Lorenzen said. “It is good for northwest Iowa because sometimes they can forget about us in this part of the state.”
“It will be a great opportunity for our kids for the exposure … but it still comes down to the game of football and guys going out there and playing hard,” West Lyon Coach Jay Rozeboom said.
The Mustangs won a tight matchup two years ago with a 16-14 victory while West Lyon was a 14-7 winner last year.
“It is a good rivalry because both teams have respect for each other, the coaching staffs get along really well and the staffs do things the right way,” Rozeboom said.
The Beef Bowl is the name this game gained several years ago thanks to the large number of beef producers in the area. There is a large cookout before the game and the teams play for a trophy that goes to the winner.
Lorenzen doesn’t expect the game to be impacted much with the added cameras and other equipment with the exception of a few TV timeouts.
In addition to broadcasting the game, Krogman said there will be a video board that will be set up showing the game at the field. Each participant in the game will receive a medallion with the Ag Bowl logo on the front and their school on the back, t-shirts will be tossed out during the game and an offensive and defensive MVP will be selected at the game’s conclusion.
“We want this game to be a lot of fun and one of the first games of the season,” Krogman said. “The schools benefit too because we pay them a rights fee that goes to the school so they can use that how they want.”
Krogman said he plans to rotate this game to different classes and sites around the state in the coming years.
