West Lyon takes back Beef Bowl

Great game Friday night. The weather was nice, crowd was huge, and burgers were great. West Lyon recieved opening kick off, did not do much and punted. CL got a little something going with good field position, but missed a FG attempt (badly). West Lyon then grinds out a very long drive, 80 yards, with at least 3 4th down conversions and Heyer scores with a Brandon Snyder PAT to make the score 7-0. A poor kick return for CL/GLR but not much else. West Lyon gets good field position and Snyder has long run to put us in position. Big Boys pound and boom! Heyer another TD run. PAT good and it is 14-0. CL/GLR now has a great return and gets down to the 10ish but are turned away. Matt Metzger with a sack on 4th down was awesome. We kneel and go to half up 14-0. At this point it seemed like West Lyon was just that much better, but with CL/GLR you just knew they would not just lay down at half. Lions receive kick off and just pound and pound, converting their own 4th downs including the Hunt TD run with about 3 minutes left in the 3rd. That's right, almost a 9 minute drive. West Lyon gets the ball back, gets another 4th down conversion, are at the 50 and....fumble. To the 4th we go and CL/GLR is driving, have 1st and goal at the 5 and.....fumble!!! Marty Pottebaum recovers. Big Blue punches out a couple first downs but CL/GLR loads up the front and we are forced to punt. Great punt by Heyer, but a couple first downs later the Lions are at our 30ish with 2:30 left. A couple no gain or loss of yards later CL is forced to pass and Brandon S has a pick. We play it safe, run almost all the clock out, punt. Lions get sacked, throw a hail mary and not this year Lions!!! Wildcats win!! Overall it seemed like the teams took turns being sluggish. I think CL/GLR will have a good year. West Lyon needs some work, but a great first win. Class 2A Sioux Center is next. I remember they used to be in our district, but that has been a long time ago. I know they lost to Lemars big, but that was on the road. We travel to Sioux Center and I am sure they have some good athletes waiting to take their shot at us. GO BIG BLUE!!
