West Lyon 2011 football

It is almost time for Beef Bowl 2011. This year it is at Rock Rapids so a short trip and I am sure it will packed. CL/GLR has already played beating class 4A Sioux City West 51-0. Congrats on that win and believe me, I have already heard about how good the Lions are this year. Well, I know we graduated alot of quality football players, but West Lyon coaches have a way of keeping the boys ready to go. I really expect a good game this friday and a good season as WL matures through the season. Heard some good things about the scrimmage, main concern is depth, just like every year. Was not there myself, but the boys seemed excited about what Big Blue is doing this year. I am looking forward to shorter road trips this year too. Oh yeah, here is the Des Moines Register poll for 2011

================
Class 1-A: Woodward-Granger now has winning tradition

Woodward-Granger used to be known for losing football games. Not anymore.

The Hawks’ program went 17-46 from 2001 to 2007. There was one winning season during that span.

But Woodward-Granger is rolling now. Last year’s team went 11-1 and reached the state quarterfinals.

Does the school have a chance to win its first state football title this fall? You bet.

Quarterback Taylor Ashman and running back Andrew McCune took the team to new heights last fall as sophomores.

Ashman passed for 1,477 yards, completing 76 percent of his passes.

McCune, who was a second-team all-state defensive lineman, rushed for 1,836 yards and 22 touchdowns.

Offensive lineman Nathan Somsky and defensive back Jacob Musser were first-team all-state picks.

Contenders: Council Bluffs St. Albert has averaged 12 wins per season since 2006. Quarterback J.D. Culjat and standout lineman Marco Naughton lead the team this year. ... West Branch returns all-state quarterback Brandon Young, who passed for 1,516 yards, along with eight other starters. ... Aplington-Parkersburg has three first-team all-district players returning, including second-team all-state running back Jason Grill, a senior who ran for 1,475 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Players to watch: Jackson Steinberg of St. Ansgar earned first-team all-state honors as an offensive lineman. He’s 6-foot-3, 255 pounds. ... North Cedar of Stanwood’s Tanner Tenley led his team with 118 tackles. He’s an all-stater at linebacker. ... Austin Stubbs of Des Moines Christian was an all-state defensive back. He also serves as his team’s quarterback. ... Josh Rekers helped guide Dike-New Hartford to the state championship game last fall. He threw for 1,754 yards and 20 touchdowns.

Quick kicks:All-state basketball player Jordan Hay of North Cedar serves as the team’s quarterback. He’s 6-6. ... Another basketball player is Payton Plagge of state champion West Fork of Sheffield. ... Carter Funke of Maquoketa Valley of Delhi kicked seven field goals last year.
