Wow, what a night. One of the biggest crowds I have ever seen at West Lyon. It was a nice night out and not enough parking. Fun game, I don't have the paper to reference so bear with me on some of the time of scores etc. I do remember this clearly, E hawks down the sideline for about 75 yards, 3rd play of the game. One minute gone and the score is 7-0 Emmetsburg. West Lyon went 3 and out, punted but so did Emmetsburg and Kyle Heyer had a great return to the 20. Trevor ended up scoring from 11 yards out with about 5:00 minutes left first. Extra point, no good. 7-6 Emmetsburg. Neither team got much going for a bit until after an E Hawk punt, West lyon gets to their own 40 and a pass is tipped and Ehawks pick it at West Lyon 35. Defense holds strong, after punt we put together a great drive and score with a minute left, 2 point convertion, 14-7 Big Blue. After half, we receive the kick and start at the 15 and BOOM Cody Ahrendt races 85 yards to put us up 21-7 (xp good). At this point Emmetsburg has only had 2 first downs and other than the big TD run, have not done anything. Well, good return, first down, big pass play down the middle to get it inside the 20. The defense keeps holding, they have a 4th and goal from the 7. Hit a pass to bring score to 21-14. We get the ball get a first down, going for another and fumble. They recover, drive deep, have first and goal at the 5. Grotewold picks the ball, get the ball back at the 17, first play, fumble, they recover. They drive a bit, start 4th quarter, 4th and 2 from the 7, Big Blue holds again. We start to drive the ball out, slowly, surely. Hard running, clock running, get past the fifty, couple more firsts, game over and we........fumble. However, Big Blue gets a 4 and out. Just get a first, have 3rd and 4 and, you guessed it, fumble...........but we recover. Punt into the endzone. Minute left, no timeouts for Emmetsburg, get to the 50 for last play, Heyer with the pick. The feeling was awesome, great to beat Emmetsburg. Cody Ahrendt had 145 yards rushing, two TDs, Trevor 71 yards and 1 TD and Sully really ran hard when he got the chance for 33 yards. Defense was the star however. Nick Thompson 7 solos, 9 assists, 2 TFL, was a force, Brendan TerWee 7 solos, 6 assists, 2 TFL, Cody Ahrendt 4 solos, 6 assists. The whole defense just showed up and held down the state's top rushing offense. Hats off guys, that was Wildcat pride showing Monday night.
Now to Saturday, West Lyon vs Council Bluff St Albert. Defending state champs, undefeated, speed team, throw it, run to the edges. Looks like they have some size. Should be a tough game. Get rid of turnovers, penalities have not been a problem this year, we should be able to give them a game:) It is great to be back in the dome. GO BIG BLUE!!
