West Lyon good, Lawton Bronson, not so much.

Big Blue kicks ass again. Thought Lawton would have more, but no. Kind of the same game we have had with them for years. Lots of hype, only we show up. Here is a good article on it. October 11, 2013 8:55 pm • BARRY POE bpoe@siouxcityjournal.com (0) Comments LAWTON, Iowa | Showing no ill effects from a short week, top-ranked West Lyon cruised to a 49-7 victory over No. 7 Lawton-Bronson in a matchup of Class A District 1 unbeatens here Friday night. West Lyon had just three days to prepare after dispatching Alta-Aurelia 42-7 in a game that was pushed back to Monday because of last Friday's tornadoes. Once the Wildcats got going, it was all downhill for Coach Jay Rozeboom's talented squad. “We had a pretty good one or two days of practice this week and the kids played hard,” Rozeboom said. “It was a hard-hitting game, a tough week but our guys were focused and did a great job of holding it together.” After a scoreless first quarter, West Lyon outscored the Eagles 29-7 in the second, picking up its seventh win in as many games this season. Lawton-Bronson is now 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the district. The Wildcats were denied when Colton Clark intercepted a Brandon Snyder pass at the goal line early in the second quarter, but Kyle Groeneweg got the ball rolling with a 56-yard punt return for a touchdown at the 8:48 mark. Lawton-Bronson then coughed up the football on its next play from scrimmage and Chase Grotewold recovered, setting up a 29-yard TD scamper by Kaleb Heyer. A two-point conversion run made it 15-0 before L-B's lone highlight of the game. Brandon Thompson took the ensuing kickoff at his own 14, broke through the first wave of tacklers and sped 86 yards for a touchdown with 7:40 remaining in the first half. Undaunted, West Lyon tacked on two more scores before halftime, Heyer's second touchdown run on a 9-yard burst up the middle and a rare touchdown pass from Snyder to Cody Bauman for 35 yards. Heyer, a 186-pound senior, rushed for a game-high 116 yards on 12 carries. West Lyon churned out 285 yards with eight different players carrying the football. The Wildcats have now amassed 2,344 yards on the ground this season. That ranked tops in the district and fifth statewide heading into Friday's game. Lawton-Bronson isn't far behind with 2,160, but managed just 126 on 42 tries Friday. “They're the No. 1-ranked team in the state and would be ranked in any class, they're that good,” Lawton-Bronson Coach Chad Moseman said. “Once they get going their kids know when to put the gas down and they keep coming at you. They're just big physical kids. I thought we would get some things going but we just couldn't sustain it and that's a credit to them.” West Lyon drove 80 yards in 16 plays on its first possession of the second half, then after Grotewold got his second fumble recovery, Snyder tossed another touchdown pass of 34 yards to Paul Ter Wee. Reserve fullback Marty Pottebaum capped the scoring with a 3-yard touchdown run with 9:41 left, which is when the continuous clock mercy rule kicked in. Junior Anteres Ashley was Lawton-Bronson's leading rusher with 45 yards on 12 carries. “We'll get better from this, absolutely,” Moseman said. “You only have two choices in life, you can get better or you get worse. Lawton-Bronson plans on getting better.” All right coach, good luck with that. So we have Woodbury next. Thought they would be good but they have struggled to a 1-6 record. We need to just keep getting better and healthy for the playoffs. We control our destiny and can host a bunch of games in the playoffs. Will be alot of fun the next few weeks!! GO BIG BLUE!!
