West Lyon loses close one to Emmetsburg
Well folks, that was a great defensive battle. Emmetsburg won 3-0. This was a record setting game for the lowest scoring state championship ever. The numbers had WL outgaining Eburg 207-172, holding them to under 150 yards rushing. The O line of WL looked to be a even with the D line from Eburg, the first half edge going to Eburg with the 2nd going to WL. The West Lyon D line was better than the Eburg O line. Forced fumbles and shutting down the Eburg trap and iso plays was very impressive. Eburg got outside once in awhile threw a bit, but the 2nd half Eburg looked as inept as WL had in the 1st half. The D line consisted of Andy Simons, Will Vant Hof, Will Van Hill and Cody Ahrendt. Just dominating. The linebackers also were great at just stuffing Eburg. It was gang tackling, tough physical football. The LB's were Brendan TerWee, Jason Koedam, Nick Thompson. The corners were Randy Kippley and Cody Doorneweerd with the safeties Brian Stai and Kyle Heyer. I just can't describe how well the D played. The offense got off to a slow start, didn't do much the 1st half and Eburg had alot to do with it. West Lyon did roll up some good yards in the 2nd half, but just couldn't quite finish the deal. Two missed field goals and a fumble at the 20 going in. I think the biggest difference between these two teams were the breaks, West Lyon could not recover a fumble the 2nd half where Eburg got everyone of them, four Eburg fumbles and one WL fumble. Either they recovered, it went out of bounds or Eburg was ruled down. WL gets just one of them and this blog would have a much happier author. These two teams were so closely matched it had to come down to a couple random bounces of the ball. However, I am very proud of this year's team and want to congratulate them. You are one of the best teams in the state and you proved it. Congrats on a 12-2 season and all the individual awards that will come with it. I'll try to post those as they become available.
